Elements and Principles of Graphic Design

[Elements]

-=Lines=-
Lines are the outlines or bases of a drawing. Some drawings are just lines themselves. Drawings that are simply lines are called "line art", and some line art is used for bases, which are made for other people to edit and make their own art, but with some basic help. Lines are also used for sketching.

-=Shape=-
Shapes are closed spaces that can either be organic, which are rounded and more fluid, and geometric, which are sharper and more precise. Shapes are defined as areas that stand out from the space around it.

Examples:
Windows Logo

This logo was chosen because it uses 5 shapes, those being 4 squares and a circle. However, the shapes also look like it makes a "Window", which fits very well considering that this logo is for Microsoft Windows.

-=Mass=-
Mass is basically the visual weight of an element. It gives emphasis to a single part of a graphic element.

-=Texture=-
A visual representation of the surface of a graphic design. Adds a "feel" to a surface and makes it have a sense of depth and tactile look.

Water Texture
This could be used for a swimming pool ad or a beach-themed ad for a surfboard company.
The Walking Dead

This shows texture by making the picture look like it is covered in dirt and dust. Fits the theme of the show by giving an "apocalypse" feeling.

-=Color=-
Color can set the mood of a design. For instance, blue is a cooler color and shows calmness. Red can mean alertness and danger, where green can be related to nature. Colors can also be gradients, two or more colors slowly fading and blending together. Color burning is where you don't shade with contrast, but instead use colors. For example, white can fade to blue, then blue to black.
